Move-in day sentiments

Now that my third and youngest son has entered college, we seem to have gotten this move-in day stuff down to an art form. Been there, done that enough times to know the subtle nuances, as well as the potential pitfalls to avoid.
That being said, personally I find move-in day rather tough on my emotions. As each son goes off to college, I reflect on their 18 years at home and how much I am going to miss seeing them each and every day. Empty nest syndrome is a very real thing – don’t let anyone kid you or say it is not. They are either lying or have no heart.
So, as we complete the unloading of the vehicles, lug the stuff to the dorm room and then unpack it, I try to savor each and every lingering moment before hugging, saying “I love you and take care,” and then letting them discover their destiny.
All three of my sons have made me very, very proud, but even writing this short post about move-in day brings a tinge of sadness to my heart and a tear to my eye knowing that things will never quite be the same again…

Here’s a new submission from our anonymous guest contributor. Doubt they will be elected to lead the Dick Cheney Fan Club anytime soon – though few would want to be.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney has a new ‘book’ out this week and has begun the magical media tour. This person should be discussed only in the context of an abnormal psych course or a court of international law. It’s crass to be out promoting his book at this time. Don’t buy it. Don’t listen to any interviews with this person. Boycott his publisher, Threshold Editions (publisher of crazy conservative flak), an imprint of Simon and Schuster (a CBS company). Shame on them for scheduling press tours close to the anniversary of 9/11.
Vice Presidents normally have the good grace to disappear into obscurity. Mr. Cheney seemingly has no plans to do so. Since he does not, we would like to recommend the following places for him to retire:
