Saw the newest Pixar movie, Brave yesterday afternoon in a theater stuffed to the rafters. While not my favorite Pixar movie of all time, it ranks up there with the best. An excellent film full of howling laughs, edge of your seat action, drama, lovely animated scenery that made me feel I was back in Scotland, and an important moral to the story -

“you must be brave enough to follow your fate.”

The best and most important aspect of the film was the two strong central characters were both women. Both Merida and her mother, the Queen are excellent characters who carry the storyline on their own. They are the heart and soul of the picture.

Most of the men in the movie are rather comical, except Merida’s father. One the three suitors for Merida even vaguely resembled a Middle Ages’ Napoleon Dynamite.

All in all, an enjoyable film that was worth every penny. One caution, small children may get frightened by some of the battle scenes, so use good judgment. Lastly, it is very nice to see Pixar back at the top of its game. Kudos on a terrific film.

Just want to wish all those with Scottish ancestry like both Molly and me, a very happy National Tartan Day.  National Tartan Day was approved by the U.S. Senate in 1998 and by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2005 to recognize the huge contribution that those of Scottish ancestry have given to our nation. Our lovely neighbor to the north, Canada, started celebrating National Tartan Day in 1993. April 6th was chosen for National Tartan Day because:

“That date commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which asserted Scotland’s sovereignty over English territorial claims, and which was an influence on the American Declaration of Independence. “

This weblink provides more information about the day,  Scotland’s influence on the United States, and Scottish heritage in general.  Below is a beautiful and sentimental song about Scotland by the Scottish band Trashcan Sinatras, entitled “Wild Mountainside.” Enjoy!

This heartwarming story from the BBC about a robin living in a store during the long and cold Scottish winter exemplifies one of the reasons I love Great Britain so much – their love of wildlife.  My, their robins much more colorful than ours. Best wishes Robbie. Cheers!
