Okay Wisconsin. Can’t think up anything innovative about your own state, so you try to steal a part of Michigan’s identity (see weblink to USA Today). At best your state resembles a fist with the pinky finger sticking out, but it hardly resembles a mitten like Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. You folks must be overdosing on Packermania. Stick to Cheeseheads and stay out of our territory. Here’s a few alternatives to consider:

  • “Wisconsin: We’re kind of cheesy”
  • “We con and sin”
  • “Wisconsin: We only lack imagination”
  • “We’re gonna badger (annoy) you”
  • “Red and white, isn’t that Alabama, Nebraska, or Indiana?”
  • “Don’t be downwind of our cows!”
  • “Wisconsin: Where labor rights are abused”
  • “Wisconsin: We wish we were Michigan “
  • “The home of closet Viking fans”
  • “Wisconsin: Chicago’s other playground”
  • “Hey…who cut the cheese, it stinks around here?”

Senate republicans in Wisconsin showed their true nature tonight by severing the deletion of collective bargaining rights from the state budget bill and then voting to eliminate them 18-1. More details are available through this weblink to npr.org. All that crap about this being a budget issue is just that, total crap. No matter how this issue turns out in the end, this was a sad night for democracy, for collective bargaining, for worker rights, for the middle class, and for our entire nation.

Congratulations to Matt Wisniewski of the University of Wisconsin for this inspired video he created in tribute to those fighting to keep their collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin. Terrific song choice too – Arcade Fire’s “Rebellion.”

Kudos to those public servants, as well as their friends and supporters in Wisconsin who are fighting against the wholesale gutting of their collective bargaining rights by radical conservatives. Wisconsin has a strong history of labor rights including being first state in the nation to allow collective bargaining by state employees.

Governor Scott Walker and the GOP are completely on the wrong side of the equation on this topic. Asking employees to contribute more is only fair if the pain and sacrifice is being shared by all, including the rich. Even worse is the cowardly and sneaky tactic of using a weak economy as a ruse for gutting collective bargaining rights.

Added kudos go to those Wisconsin Senate democrats who are boycotting the capitol so a vote cannot take place. A brilliant tactic that is seriously ballsy.

Even if you are not a union worker this attempt to gut labor laws affects you. Do you really think employers are going to put their employees ahead of greed and profits if there is no longer the risk of them forming or joining a union? They may not be perfect, but unions form an important protective barrier that helps limit abusive and illegal actions on the part of employers.

On Wisconsin, we progressives support your on-going fight against the radical GOP conservative puppets and their wealthy benefactors. In light of the on-going political battle in Madison, the last verse of Wisconsin’s famous fight song seems particularly ironic:

“On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!

Stand up, Badgers, sing!

‘Forward’ is our driving spirit,

Loyal voices ring.

On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!

Raise her glowing flame

Stand, Fellows, let us now

Salute her name!”

In a state whose motto is “Forward,” now is the time to put the brakes on the radical conservatives twisted agenda to turn back time. The race to the bottom must stop!
